2023 Queenan Global Health Awards
Pictured above (left to right): Drs. Sarah Boudova, Jessica Chung, Anar Gojayev, and Andrea Pembe have been selected as the recipients of the 2023 Queenan Global Health Awards.
Sarah Boudova, MD, PhD, a second-year maternal-fetal medicine fellow at Thomas Jefferson University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a recipient of the International Agency Mentored Research Fellowship (Geneva-based agency). This mentored fellowship will support her interest in international maternal and perinatal health research and guideline development.
Dr. Boudova is particularly interested in infectious diseases and plans to focus on using public health interventions during pregnancy to combat globally significant infectious diseases. This opportunity will help Dr. Boudova learn new research skills, learn how international guides are developed, and learn how research is translated into public health policy.
Jessica Chung, MD, MPH, a first-year maternal-fetal medicine fellow at the Medical College of Wisconsin, is the inaugural recipient of the International Agency Mentored Research Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This mentored fellowship will support her interest in international maternal and perinatal health research and guideline development.
Dr. Chung is particularly interested in advocating for clinical care improvement on a global scale and believes that strong programming improves community healthcare and, consequently, overall health outcomes. This opportunity will help Dr. Chung meld her clinical knowledge with her public health background to advance maternal clinical care research and education.
Anar Gojayev, MD, a third-year maternal-fetal medicine fellow at Albany Medical Center, has received the Visiting Teaching Fellowship and will spend two months as a visiting faculty member at the Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana, in 2024.
Dr. Gojayev will interact primarily with the hospital’s first graduating class of OBGYN residents through lectures and presentations on high-risk obstetrics. His core curriculum will focus on expanding the obstetrical ultrasound training and critical obstetric care implemented through a Queenan Global Health Award Fellow in 2022. This opportunity will promote Dr. Gojayev’s passion for education, research, and serving underserved and marginalized populations.
Andrea Barnabas Pembe, MD, MMed, PhD, is the 2023 Queenan Travel Award recipient. Dr. Pembe is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He provides clinical services, trains and mentors students and young professionals, and conducts research. Dr. Pembe’s research is focused on reproductive, maternal, and newborn health and is biased toward quality of health care, public health, health systems, and implementation science.
The Foundation for SMFM hosted Dr. Pembe at the 2024 SMFM Pregnancy Meeting in National Harbor, MD. His group’s abstract, “Lower thresholds for diagnosing hypertension in pregnancy and perinatal outcomes in large Tanzanian cohort,” was presented during Oral Concurrent Session 4 on Wednesday, February 14.
