Remembering the Legacy of John T. Queenan, MD
John T. Queenan, MD, 91, passed peacefully on September 21, 2024. Dr. Queenan was an honors graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College.
He interned in Internal Medicine at the Cornell Division of Bellevue Hospital and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Queenan's pioneering research and work in Rhesus (Rh) disease of pregnancy with amniocentesis, amniotic fluid analysis, intrauterine transfusions, and Rh-immune prophylaxis earned him international recognition. His influence extended to the FDA, where he chaired the Fetal Monitoring Committee from 1976-87. He was a prolific author who contributed to scientific journal articles, numerous book chapters, and influential textbooks. Even after retirement, he continued to share his knowledge globally and served as the Deputy Editor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, 'the Green Journal.'
In 2014, the Foundation for SMFM recognized Dr. Queenan's global health initiatives and developed the Queenan Global Health Awards. The program aims to train current and future leaders in perinatal health to partner in advancing obstetrics in low- and middle-income countries around the globe, where a disproportionate burden of adverse outcomes occurs.
He was not just a physician, author, and research scientist but also a mentor and leader in the medical community. His influence extended to his roles as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carrie, sister Jane Steen, son John Jr., daughter Lynne Beauregard, and five grandchildren to whom he was devoted.
To honor Dr. Queenan's memory, his family has requested that you consider making a gift to the Foundation for SMFM in lieu of flowers.
